Key West, being situated in the Florida Keys, is susceptible to hurricanes due to its location in the subtropical region of the North Atlantic basin. Historically, hurricanes have impacted Key West, sometimes causing significant damage due to strong winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall.

The city has experienced notable hurricanes throughout its history, including Hurricane Irma in 2017, which caused widespread devastation across the Florida Keys, including Key West. Prior to that, Hurricane Wilma in 2005, Hurricane Georges in 1998, and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 are among the notable storms that have affected the area.
